WARWICK TO OPEN NEW DRAG RACING SERIES THIS WEEKEND
Article Date: 8 March 2010
The first-ever round of the new Nitro Magazine South Queensland Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series will kick off this Saturday March 13 at Warwick Dragway.
Late last year Willowbank Raceway president John Winterburn announced the new series, which takes in the eighth-mile drag strips – Warwick Dragway and Ironbark Raceway– as well as Benaraby Dragway and Willowbank Raceway utilising the eighth mile distance, to provide a three-round plus a final series for sportsman racers from March to September in 2010.
Two racers guaranteed to be there lapping up the eighth mile action at Warwick are local cousins Matthew and Andrew Loy, who will be racing in the Cosmic Enterprises Junior Dragster and R.D. Williams Excavator Parts Modified brackets respectively.
Twenty-eight year old INTEGRIA Health Care worker Andrew and 13 year old Warwick High School student Matthew – both of Warwick and part of a large drag racing family– are hoping that sportsman racers and fans state-wide get behind all of the rounds of the new series, starting with this weekend’s action at their local drag strip.
“This is a great idea for the racers, something we haven’t had before and I really hope the competitors get behind it and travel to all of the events on the calendar,” said Andrew Loy, who started drag racing in Super Sedan eight years ago.
“Drag racing is something that we all love, that adrenalin rush just gets to you, so its great to see something new for the racers and I encourage everyone to get behind it.”
Matthew, whose father John and uncle Chris also race in Supercharged Outlaws with involvement stretching back to the days of Surfers Paradise Raceway, is looking forward to catching up with his racing mates at all of the rounds of the series.
“The best thing about drag racing is the fun of it, seeing your mates and just getting out there and having a good time, and that is what I am looking forward to this weekend,” said Matt, who has been racing since the age of eight and took out the JBS Best Reaction Time award for the Junior Dragster category at Willowbank Raceway’s 2006 Nationals event.
“I think that it’s a really good idea that a series is coming around to all the little tracks like Warwick, and we will be going to all of the rounds so I hope lots of other racers do too.”
Modified, Super Sedan, Super Street, Modified Bike, Junior Dragster and Classic categories will be eligible to run during the series, which will kick off with its first round at Warwick on the 13th of March 2010.
Round Two will take place on the 15th of May at Ironbark before the third round gets underway at Willowbank Raceway on the 3rd of July. A Grand Final round will then be run at Benaraby Dragway on the 25th of September 2010. The Grand Final will be hosted by each track on a rotational basis year by year.
Special Winner and Runner-Up trophies will be available for each bracket at each round, with the Grand Finals to see a special Winner trophy plus $750 prize money awarded to the highest point scorer of each bracket, and a special Runner-Up trophy and $250 go to the second highest point scorer of each bracket.
