Willowbank Raceway - General News: BIGGEST PRIZE POOL EVER FOR PRO SLAMMER IN AUSTRALIA

BIGGEST PRIZE POOL EVER FOR PRO SLAMMER IN AUSTRALIA

3 June 2016

The 2016 City of Ipswich Winternationals will see one of the largest and most-talented fields of Pro Slammer take to the Willowbank strip, and with a new Australian Championship on the line fans are guaranteed some of the most exciting racing the bracket has seen all year!

Fuelled by one of the biggest prize pools ever offered for the Pro Slammer category in Australia, the 2016 City of Ipswich Winternationals will welcome a field twice the size of an normal Pro Slammer meet!

A whopping 16 cars pack out the Wallace Bishop-sponsored Pro Slammer field at this year's Winters, with talent traveling from all corners of the country including some of the fiercest racers making the trek from Western Australia to mix it up with the East Coast crew, all vying for valuable championship points.

“Our first focus for sponsorship was the Junior Dragster category, as they’re the future of drag racing,” remarks Stuart Bishop of Wallace Bishop. “However I was quick to jump on to Pro Slammer to help the sport attract the attention of other, larger sponsors for future events – to grow the sport and attract sponsors who might not be part of the auto industry,” he continues.

Bishop is entered in the Pro Slammer category, and is rightly coy about the potential of his freshly-built Camaro. “The new car is coming! I’m very proud of Daniel Reed and Stephen Godbold for their effort and pride that they have put into building what I think is a superior quality product,” he elaborates, neglecting to mention the amazing test passes the car laid down in a shakedown ahead of the 2016 City of Ipswich Winternationals. The car shows immense promise, and is sure to keep the rest of the field honest.

“Winternationals is the finale to the season’s racing, I haven’t raced for a while so I’m just happy to be there and put in the work for a great race day,” says Bishop in closing.

Pro Slammers are the ultimate drag racing sedans, and are some of the most recognisable forms in the drag racing field. Their sleek, smooth bodies are aerodynamically-tweaked fibreglass replicas of some of the most iconic road-going muscle car shapes the world has ever seen – Tri-5 Chevys, Corvettes, Camaros and even modern muscle cars.

Renowned for their wicked graphics and towering, supercharged V8 motors reaching the car’s roofline, combined with headers poking out from behind the front wheels, Pro Slammers are a verifiable symbol of speed, and raw, earth-turning horsepower.

The cars make in the vicinity of 3,000 horsepower and can cover the quarter mile in well under 6-seconds, reaching top speeds of 250miles per hour.

The talk of the town has been the long-awaited return of several-time Pro Slammer Champion and the Queensland crowd's perennial favourite racer, one of the class’s true pioneers Victor Bray. Bray returns from an extended sabbatical from Drag Racing, during which time he underwent extensive personal development to keep himself competitive after thirty years behind the wheel.

“The Winternationals is Australia’s iconic drag racing event, so we’re looking forward to getting back out there,” said Victor in an interview ahead of the 2016 event. The field of competitors for the returning champion includes his own son Ben, which we’re sure will make for interesting dinner table conversation at the Bray household after the event!

The Pro Slammers take to the track from 9th June, 2016 and will be racing all weekend at the 2016 City of Ipswich Winternationals, held at Willowbank Raceway. Tickets are available on the gate and online - for more information click HERE.
