RACERS BATTLE IT OUT AT THE 6TH ROUND OF QDRC

19 September 2016

It was a beautiful day for the sixth round of the Queensland Drag Racing Championship on Saturday at Willowbank Raceway. Playing host to 200 entrants, it was an action packed day full of competitive head to head racing. With only a few points separating the top contenders for the track championship, it was an important event for racers to chase down the wins with only one round left for the 2016 season.

The day saw racing from Knijff Earthmoving Modified, Powercruise Super Sedan, Prime Signs/Speed Elec Super Street, Sports Turf Services Modified Bike, Wallace Bishop Loyal Watches Junior Dragster, crowd favourite Donnelly Blasting Services Outlaws and one of the most exciting new brackets the Kenda Tires Drag Radial.

In a father-son final for the QDRC Outlaws, Bill Fletcher took on son Josh Fletcher to take home the win for round 6. Lucas Holz took the lead for championship points with a win in Super Street, and after making it to the finals two rounds in a row Dominic Nipperress was able to take home the win for Junior Dragster. Saturdays racing also saw wins from Max Carpenter for Super Sedan, Ken Collin in Modified Bike, and Andrew Sargent taking home the trophy in the Modified bracket.

The Kenda Tires 660 Drag Radial series had 65 racers in a variety of cars racing down the 1/8th mile, all with radial tyres. The competition included turbo cars from Sydney, nitrous powered cars from Melbourne and all the local racers wanting to win the coveted championship. Greg Emberley took home the championship belt, who sealed the deal in the last round of racing by five points over runner-up Brian Ward.

Drag racing fans were also treated to a bonus session of testing that included the popular ‘Rocketship’ wheelstander piloted by Kaine Schwarz and the Outlaw Nitro Funny Car ‘Bumble Bee’ driven by usual Rocketship pilot, Dan Donnelly. Both DBS racing drivers consistently put down good passes, and Dan looked comfortable in the driver’s seat of the family Funny Car and pumped out a new personal best of 5.84 at 245.99.

Next up for Willowbank Raceway is the Eighth Mile Series this Saturday, followed by the finals for the Street Series during the 1st of October (Powder Puff) and 8th of October (Street Sedan, Street Bike) Test n Tune events, with the final round of the QDRC to crown the 2016 Champions on October 29th.
