Willowbank Raceway - General News: ARMY VET LEADS SUPER STREET STANDINGS TO FINAL STAND

ARMY VET LEADS SUPER STREET STANDINGS TO FINAL STAND

19 September 2016

Ex-army serviceman Josh Pile is leading the point standings of the 2016 JP Racing Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series Super Street category with just one round left to run.

The finale round of the Series – which has enjoyed record entries for each event this year - will be held at Willowbank Raceway on the 24th of September and the 34 year old is looking forward to what could be a true highlight of his first full racing season.

“To be leading the points is really great, but it has all been so flukey, it is beginner’s luck,” laughed Ipswich’s Pile.

“I have driven events here and there in the past, but after leaving the Army in November of last year, this has been the first time I have been able to do a full series.

“I haven’t really felt like I know what I am doing at all, thankfully a lot of blokes have given me a hand – for the first two events my friend Merv was telling me my dial-ins even though we were racing against each other, because I just didn’t have a clue.

“That has been something I have found to be really good about this Series – even though we are racing against each other, everyone helps out and it is all about home grown fun.”

Making his position at the top of the points standings even more impressive is the fact that his successes this year have come in his ‘everyday driver’ – a 1943 Chev Pick-Up.

“It is a handmade chassis, with an I-Beam front-end and an L300 rear end, with a 179 Trimatic engine with Triple SU carbies. I got to do some things on it but I didn’t build it all myself, and the two guys who built it for me presented it to me all finished as my present when I got back from Timor.

“My daughter is already eyeing it off as hers, but she is only seven at the moment so I have some time up my sleeve!” he laughed.

When it comes to the result of the upcoming finale, Pile isn’t getting ahead of himself.

“We will just show up and see what happens – fingers crossed it goes my way, but I really don’t know what will happen,” Pile said.

“I have no idea if I will win, just go out there and see what happens,” Pile said.

“That is the best part – it is anyone’s game. I am leading the points at the moment, but anything can happen and it could go either way.

“No matter what happens, I have to thank John Payne of JP Racing for supporting the Series and all of the volunteers that contribute their time to make the wheels go round – we couldn’t do this without them.

“Also to Merv, and the Moo Crew – I met them a couple of years ago and they help me along the way. Finally, to anyone else that has come up and given me info and pointed me in the right direction. Everyone has been pretty friendly to me, there are just too many people to list.”

The 2016 season marks the seventh consecutive year of the Series, which hosts racing for not only Pile and his fellow John William Auto Sales Super Street racers, but also the RD Williams Excavator Parts Modified, FG Loy and Sons Earthmoving Eighth Mile Outlaws, Ice Slushee Super Sedan, Queensland Nameplate Group Modified Bike and Diamond T Products Junior Dragster categories.
