Willowbank Raceway - General News: FINAL COUNTDOWN TO NEW SUPER 3 RACE FORMAT BEGINS

FINAL COUNTDOWN TO NEW SUPER 3 RACE FORMAT BEGINS

1 March 2013

Just four weeks remain until the Santo’s Cranes Super 3 Extreme Drag Race event brings professional drag racing at Willowbank Raceway back to the Easter timeslot for the first time in many years.

With an exciting new approach for the Top Fuel and Top Alcohol entrants which sees two individual championship rounds held in the one event with a three round race format (as opposed to traditional elimination-style racing); the March 29 and 30 affair is attracting wide attention both in and outside of Australia’s drag racing community.

To better demonstrate how the professional race teams will battle it out this Easter at Queensland’s premier drag racing facility, event organisers have today released an infographic showing the format in action.

“As a big step away from the traditional format of elimination or tournament-style racing, this new approach to professional championship-level competition is still in its infancy in Australia and this will be the first time it has been seen at this level at our venue,” said Willowbank Raceway Managing Director Steve Bettes.

“This is really an exciting time for drag racing throughout Australia, as we seek to build an event which takes a completely new approach to our sport focusing on fast, action-packed entertainment – much like the Twenty20 format for the sport of cricket.

“What this means is more racing, higher stakes and a need for the racers to ‘think outside of the box’ for their strategies – which could result in some great on-track battles and shock results when it comes time to hit the quarter-mile next month – along with an action-packed entertainment program both on and off the track across the two days.

“With entries now open and tickets available online at www.willowbankraceway.com.au, the excitement is certainly building!”

The Santo’s Cranes Super 3 Extreme Drag Race will also feature the Louie Rapisarda Trophy Race, honouring the Top Fuel driver who passed away in 1990. Thanks to a partnership between Louie’s father and event sponsor Santo Rapisarda and Willowbank Raceway, a special commemorative trophy for the winner of the Top Fuel bracket will be on offer. The combined points for Top Fuel from both Friday and Saturday will be used to determine the winner of the Louie Rapisarda Trophy.

Joining the Top Fuel and Top Alcohol racers on-track during the Easter event will be an array of sportsman competitors across the Outlaw 10.5, Pro/Modified Street Blown and a range of fixed index, heads-up pro start categories; who will complete three qualifying sessions on Friday 29 March before racing in a Chicago Shootout plus final format on Saturday 30 March.

Willowbank Raceway is Queensland’s premier drag racing facility, located 45 minutes from Brisbane or just a short drive from Ipswich, offering a year-round program of events for the entire family. For more information including a full event calendar, please visit www.willowbankraceway.com.au

Top Fuel and Top Alcohol
The Super 3 Extreme Drag Race concept will operate on the idea of two individual championship rounds in one event, with a winner to be crowned on both the Friday and the Saturday of the event. Racing will begin with the first pass for all cars at approximately 5.00pm followed by an elimination round for all cars later in the evening. From this round, the third and fourth quickest winners will proceed to the ‘Preliminary Final’ while the two quickest winners battle it out in ‘The Final’, as per the Special 3 Round Format ratified this season in the ANDRA rulebook. Once the winner is crowned on Friday, the full field for each bracket will get ready to do it all over again on Saturday.

All other categories
All sportsman categories will complete three qualifying passes on Friday 29 March, before Saturday 30 March sees all sportsman brackets run a Chicago Shootout format with all competitors to race three rounds with the two best performing racers to make it into the final. At the completion
