Nostalgias countdown underway at Willowbank Raceway

4 July 2012

Just a month remains until the Cruzin Magazine Nostalgia Nationals hits Willowbank Raceway over the 11th and 12th of August 2012.

Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars will lead the way for an expected 200 racers at Queensland’s premier drag racing facility, with the event also to incorporate the annual Willowbank Raceway Super Swap Meet, traders and a Shannons show n’ shine.

“With the first of the two scheduled nostalgia events at Willowbank Raceway for 2012 – which had more than 170 entrants - cancelled due to wet weather in March, the racers, spectators and track management are all ready and rearing to go for the August event,” said Willowbank Raceway Managing Director Steve Bettes.

“With nostalgia nitro funny cars leading more than 200 of their fellow nostalgia enthusiasts on-track, with dragsters, funny cars, USA and Aussie muscle cars, hot rods, the show n’ shine, the super swap meet and plenty of on and off track action, the August outing of the Cruzin Magazine Nostalgia Nationals is shaping up to be a fantastic event for all involved.”

No less than three Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars will take to the track, lead by popular Top Fuel racer Andrew Cowin and his 1957 Nitro Express Chevrolet Belair fielded by the Rocket Industries team.

Joining him on track in the nitro ranks will be team-mate Shane Olive and his 1971 Fast Company Plymouth Satellite, and Robert West at the wheel of Paul Shackleton’s 1970 Shack Attack Mach 1 Ford Mustang.

Also set to attract plenty of interest is the annual Willowbank Raceway Super Swap meet, which is expected to attract hundreds of traders and plenty of buyers.

“Interest in our annual super swap meet is always high and this year is no exception, with gates opening at 5.30am on Saturday morning for traders and 6am for buyers, the Super Swap has grown every year with lots of buyers and traders with a wide range of items on offer.”

Late last year, Willowbank Raceway and the Cruzin Magazine Nostalgia Nationals announced a new association which sees the Nostalgia events held at the venue run under the care of Willowbank Raceway track management.

The arrangement has seen a new race format introduced for 2012, and a third event and an exciting new class of racing – Nostalgia Super Stock - to be introduced in 2013.

Under the new format, a range of Elapsed Time (ET) cut-offs have been created, including 6.60s, 7.60s, 8.60s and 9.60s. Cars running 10.50s and slower will be grouped together based on qualifying times into smaller Dial Your Own (DYO) fields. No break outs will be allowed in any of the categories and they will all run on the Chicago Shootout format, guaranteeing plenty of runs for every competitor.
