Championship chases to explode at FUCHS Winternationals

18 May 2012

Championship mayhem can be expected this Queen’s birthday long weekend at Willowbank Raceway, with a number of title battles set to come down to the wire at the season-finale FUCHS Winternationals on 8-11 June 2012.

As the final round in the 2011/2012 national championship chase for the Australian drag racing scene, the FUCHS Winternationals is Australia’s largest drag racing event and a regular venue of ‘to the wire’ title battles, hosting up to 500 racers and more than 38,000 spectators over its four big days.

Willowbank Raceway Managing Director Steve Bettes encouraged fans to get in quick to pre-purchase multi-day passes to secure their seat trackside.

“Until June 6th, fans have the chance to access multi-day passes via
www.willowbankraceway.com.au offering savings and convenience ahead for this drag racing and entertainment bonanza,” said Bettes.

“Following the recent penultimate championship round in Sydney, all across the entry list there are championship battles coming down to the wire, including in the ANDRA Pro Series brackets which are always fan favourites.

“In Top Fuel Damien Harris is just 2.5 points in front of reigning champ Darren Morgan after he took his first gold Christmas tree in Sydney and both sets of bonus points, while in Pro Stock there are just 1.5 points between points leader Denis Whiting and second-placed Michael Ali.

“Top Doorslammer in Sydney saw the infamous West Australian pair of Robin Judd and John Zappia continue to trade blows and 5.7 second passes, and Peter Kapiris also stepping into the 5.7 zone. These racers along with the rest of the field will always turn on a show at Willowbank and you can expect a great on-track battle for Winternationals glory.

“In Top Alcohol Sydney saw an all funny car, all Queensland final round with 14 time champion Gary Phillips taking on Steven Ham. With Ham beating out the champ in a narrow victory you can be sure Phillips will be focused on securing not just championship but all event honours at Willowbank Raceway.

“The two-wheel Pro racers have also been lighting it up, with Lachland Ireland heading to Willowbank with two wins from two rounds in Pro Stock Bike, seeing him leading the points over reigning champ Maurice Allen, while Queensland’s Chris Matheson continues to dominate in Top Bike – Matheson will be one to keep an eye on with his team nominating their first five-second bike pass as a personal goal for the FUCHS Winternationals.”

Across 8-11 June 2012 Willowbank Raceway will host the 45th running of Australia’s largest drag racing event, with the FUCHS Winternationals to feature the final rounds of both the ANDRA Pro Series and the Rocket Allstars Racing Series.

The action will not be confined to the quarter-mile however, with family entertainment, trade shows and plenty of action in the facility for the whole family. Tickets start from just $20 with students (with ID) able to access discounted entry and children 13 and under enjoying free admission.
